Memorial Day 2013 in New Milford, CT! Parades and Duck Races.

New Milford CT Memorial Day Parade 2013I am so looking forward to this Memorial Day in New Milford, CT. Our office is on the green now, right in the thick of the parade route! I have it all planned out, I am bringing my chairs to the office on Sunday night, parking my car at my daughters house on Monday and walking to the office. Every year for as long as I have lived here I have gone to the Memorial Day Parade in New Milford, and I have enjoyed one year just as much as the next. There is something so very moving to be with others while remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us.

Of course we also think of Memorial Day as the kick off to all things summer, barbeques, pool parties, hotdogs and hamburgers, watermelon and picnics. But it truly is so much more. It is a day to pause and reflect of the greatest sacrifice made by so many, many brave men and women who fought for this country and paid the ultimate price. I wrote about it here, On finding Privates Phillips & Coyes for Memorial Day, New Milford, CT.

Memorial Day Parade time kick off in New Milford CT starts at 10 am on Memorial Day, Monday May 27, 2013. (weather permitting of course). The event starts at the New Milford Public Library where officals will speak and the invocation will be given. The parade will travel down East Main Street, turn on to Bridge Street, follow down Railroad Street, north to Bennitt Street and then West Main Street. Then officials will lay wreaths at the war memorial on the green and travel to Veterans Bridge and toss a wreath into the Housatonice River to honor those service men and women who served in the Navy and gave their lives.

Along with a few others from the office (and my grandsons I am sure), I will be firmly planted in front of our new diggs on Main Street, ready for the parade to go by. After that it is a trip to Youngs Field for the Great Housatonic Duck Race! Race time kick off, 11:30 am. Have you  bought your duck this year? If not, go to the New Milford Rotary website where you can purchase your very own entry in the race. Or if you prefer, tickets can be purchased through any Rotarian from the New Milford Rotary. I have been training my duck all year long, so let's hope he does the right thing this year instead of his usual antics of getting side tracked by some good looking duckette. You just might win one of 5 great prizes,  an 55" HD flat screen tv, $500, a Nook color e-reader, an iPod Touch or a 26" mountain bike. Not bad for a day at the races!

No matter how much fun you have at the parade and will have at your bbq's and picnics, just remember it is a day to honor those who gave all they really had to give, their lives, in order that we can live ours free in this country. It is truly a day to remember and honor them, from the Civil War to our present day.

Proper United States Flag Etiquette for Memorial Day. The flag is to be raised to full staff briskly in the morning, then immediately lowered to half staff until noon to honor all the U.S. Servicemen and Servicewomen who died in service to this country. At noon it is to be raised to full staff until sunset.

A bit more history surrounding Memorial Day. Ever wonder where those poppies come from? Canada is to thank for this long standing tradition linked to Memorial Day. VFW, Poppies and Flanders Field, The U.S. and Canada stand as brother and sister.
