Sizzlin hot temps here in CT, surviving the heat wave.
The temperature is rising with no relief until the end of the week! For those of us that don't have central air or even window air conditioners here are a few suggestions that might help you survive the heat.
- Put a cool wet towel over your head and shoulders
- Put your feet in a bucket of ice water
- Drink plenty of water (avoid caffeine and alcohol)
- Take quick, cool showers
- Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing of fabric that breaths
- Stay out of the sun
- Avoid too much activity
- Keep your windows and curtains closed during the day
Check on the elderly, they often don't have the ability to feel the heat, but their bodies will still react to it. A trip to the grocery store or department store, a restaurant, these things can help if you just can't stand the heat. Young children also don't have the ability to tolerate the heat. Keep them inside, take the same precautions with them as with the elderly.
Can you recognize heat related illnesses? Here is a great list from Medicinenet.com, you should check it out. Heat rash, heat cramps, heat syncope, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a true medical emergency, you should learn to recognize the symptoms.
Finally, don't cut the grass. One of the worst thing you can do is to cut the grass during a heat wave. It will cause the grass to turn brown even faster! So stay inside, if you have air conditioning, enjoy it. If you don't, pay attention to how you are feeling and perhaps find a friend that does have AC or go out to a restaurant! Who wants to cook in the heat anyway?

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. - Mark Twain
