Lake Lillinonah Spring Cleaning, Save the Lake Day, May 22, 2010

Lake Lillinonah needs a spring cleaning! Save the Lake Day is May 22, 2010 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm starting at the state boat launch in Bridgewater, CT on Rt. 133. According to the Friends of the Lake, everyone will be given plastic bags, gloves and tarps, and will be sent out in teams along the shore and in boats. When finished, lunch will be provided for all who have worked hard to clean up the lake. Fun, food and a cleaner lake is promised!

Lake Lillinonah is part of the Housatonic River. Beginning in New Milford just below the old Bleachery Dam, the lake heads toward Bridgewater through Lovers Leap Gorge, winds through Brookfield, Roxbury, Southbury and Newtown where it ends, becoming the Housatonic River once again. The lake has created 45 miles of beautiful shoreline and a wonderful boating and fishing opportunity for all and some magnificent waterfront real estate along the shoreline.

Another claim to fame, Bridgewater is the last remaining dry town in Connecticut!

Lake Lillinonah runs through Bridgewater, CT providing fishing and boating opportunties. Spend some time getting to know the townsfolk at the Bridgewater Village Store, have a great breakfast or lunch, sit and talk with the locals. It is a long standing tradition in Bridgewater, CT and I am sure that many decisions have been made while having a cup of coffee in the store!

The Bridgewater Country Fair, Bridgewater Connecticut is a great agricultural fair. Although we have had 2 days of rain, mud up to their eyeballs over there, the fair was great fun. I went for a few hours today and took pictures. I wanted to see the oxen pull as I know some of the contestants! The Texas Longhorns and the Dutch Belted are owned by Richard Smith Sr, and are really gentle boys. But watching them work is amazing. The Dutch Belted were first, they are only 2 years old. I remember them when they were babies without horns! They didn't place, but it was good experience for them. The first group started pulling 1600 pounds and ended up pulling 6000 pounds. WOW!

Cows, chickens, rabbits, pig races, an elephant, sheep, so many animals to see. Little kids in a pedal tractor pull, the Hot Dog Pig Races, rides, food, just great fun!

The Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department deserves a big round of applause for all the extra work they had to do to keep the fair running with all the mud and rain. All the volunteers are a great group and made this fair another great one!

Bridgewater Country Fair, August 21, 22 and 23rd. Parades, Animals, Crafts, Vendors, Agriculture, Rides, Food and More! A real country fair in Connecticut.

This weekend is the Bridgewater Country Fair, an annual event sponsored by the Bridgewater Fire Department. I stopped by the fairgrounds today and took photos in anticipation of the upcoming events. The tents are up, the "carnies" are there setting up the rides, the town is sprucing up, this is going to be another stellar local event! I found a fun page of facts about the Bridgewater Country Fair, check it out, it was fun info.

What can you expect? Check out the Bridgewater Country Fair website for more information. I know what I am looking forward to.

Friday night opening ceremonies begin at 6:30 pm, the parade at 6:45. Do get their early to get a good viewing spot. Volunteer fire departments from all over Connecticut and New York will be sporting their best, have polished up the fire engines, the antiques in anticipation of the event. I love the parade, and hope that I get a good spot for photo opps!

In addition to the parade, Hot Dog Pig Racing will begin at 4:30 PM on Friday and continue throughout the fair days.

I am also planning to go Sunday morning for the Oxen Pulls, I happen to know a few of the contestants personally and hope to get some good photos of the boys.

Perhaps antique tractor pulls are more to your liking, or how about the Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull, that sounds like it would be great fun to watch! Among other things there will be pies, cakes, pickles, canned goods, vegetables, needlework, fancy poultry, dairy cattle, all to be judged. There is a wool & shearing event for the sheep fancier, Commerford Exotic Animals has a petting zoo, animal rides and educational programs. For more information check this out.

Vendors abound, with great items to purchase, and the midway will be full of fun rides and games! Music, food, and more. Something for everyone. Check out the schedule of events.

So change your plans if you are busy, or make plans to go if you're not busy. The Bridgewater Country Fair is a great place to go, it is a true, old fashioned country fair and a good time will be had by all.

On October 23rd, 2005, the Somers Connecticut Congregational Church dedicated what is known as the "Field of Flags" to honor and commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Memorial Garden Committee also wanted to show support to those serving, and this was their way of doing it. The first Field of Flags had 2,231 American flags back then, as that was the amount of our soldiers who had died.

The display has traveled since then, adding more flags to the display as more of our service men and women give up their lives for our freedom.

I had never heard of the Field of Flags before, but the other night I was traveling through Bridgewater, and saw the Field of Flags at the Bridgewater Congregational Church. There were people out there taking pictures, reading the display with the names posted, wandering through the field. It was quite a sight to behold.

The display has grown to almost 5,000 flags, unfortunately.

Thank you to those volunteers who are keeping this Field of Flags going.
