Lake Lillinonah, Save the Lake Day!

It's clean up day at Lake Lillinonah! This Saturday, May 16th from 9am - 1pm is "Save the Lake Day". Meet at the Route 133 boat launch in Bridgewater at 9:00 am, food and supplies to be provided.

Clean up will be along the shores, and for those who can, on the water. If you can't be there but have cleaned up along the shores, leave the bags of debris at the boat launch on Saturday.

Lake Lillinonah stretches along 45 miles of shoreline from New Milford, through Bridgewater and Brookfield, winding it's way through Roxbury, Southbury and Newtown to the Stevens Dam.  Created in 1955 by Connecticut Light and Power for hydroelectricity, it has become a wonderful boating and fishing spot, and created wonderful waterfront homes! 43 miles of the 45 miles are wooded forest, which plays home to about 40 bald eagles in the wintertime. Boating access is limited with public boat launches in Bridgewater, Newtown, Southbury and a small boat launch in New Milford at Addis Park.  There is also the West Cove Marina on West Street in New Milford for private boats, a full service marina.

Also a premiere fishing destination, the lake has an assortment of Large and Small Mouth Bass, White Perch and Common Carp. Check out the  information from  the State of Connecticut  DEP  website about fishing in the state and  fishing tournaments!

Prefer to row? Because of the layout, Lake Lillononah is a wonderful place to row. The GMS Rowing Center in New Milford is a perfect place to start.

Of course there is legend associated with Lake Lillononah and Lovers Leap Gorge. Legend has it that Lillononah was the daughter of Chief Waramaug of the Wyantenoc Tribe. The area where the lake is now was their farming ground. Long story short, she fell in love with a white man, they were to marry, he left her for a time, she was heartsick and decided to go over the falls, at the same moment she was in a boat, he was on top of the river at Lovers Leap, saw her, and jumped. They went over the falls together to their deaths. There is a beautiful state park beginning at the Lovers Leap Bridge in New Milford, an area very rich in history. Lovers Leap State Park is a wonderful place to hike, with many interesting sites along the way, and is the headway of Lake Lillononah. I have read a few different things, some say Lake Lillononah starts at the Bleachery Dam on the Housatonic River in New Milford, some say it begins at Lovers Leap Gorge. Wherever it starts, what a beautiful lake it is!

I took pictures of Lake Lillononah  at the headway in New Milford and Bridgewater. Enjoy!

Anything done Andrea to clean up around the lake will in the end make it a much more pleasant scene for everyone. I'd join in if I was in the neighborhood. Bring me an extra pair of gloves (size L) from the house : )

Gary, LOL, if you were to show up, I would bring you a case of gloves, a gourmet meal and the best cappuchino you have ever had, now how is THAT!
