Memorial Day Thoughts From New Milford CT

Commemoration plaque New Milford CTTomorrow is the day we celebrate Memorial Day. Early this morning I went around downtown New Milford to take a few pictures of our beautiful town, all the flags are lining Main Street and beyond, the flowers are planted, and tomorrow the wreaths will be placed in front of the memorial at the south end of the green. The streets will be lined with spectators waving their flags as the parade passes by. We will have a gun salute that will chill me to the bone, then taps, which always brings a tear to my eye. Then off to Veterans Bridge to toss a wreath in the river in memory of the sailors who lost their lives in service to our country. Next, the Great Housatonic Duck Race, sponsored by the New Milford Rotary Club. I love the duck race, I have my own duck entered. Let’s just hope this year he doesn’t get off to a slow start again. We have been in training all year long and I expect to win that 50 inch plasma TV! After the festivities it is off to my oldest daughters to have a BBQ of course.

After I left the Village Green this morning I pulled into Center Cemetery, I wanted to see the flags that had been placed. There were so many, it was a stirring sight to be sure. But what I found most interesting is that the oldest part of the cemetery had flags placed by the headstones of those who served us so many many years ago. A long time

gone, but certainly for this day, not forgotten and much appreciated.

My heart swells with pride, is heavy with sorrow for all the men and women lost in service to our country, for all the conflicts, police actions and wars. One day out of 365 is not enough to thank you for your sacrifice, one day is not enough to let your loved ones know how much we appreciate that you laid down your life for us. For those who died oh so many years ago, long forgotten names and times, today I will hold you in my heart and you will live again.

Have a wonderful, safe, happy and healthy Memorial Day. I hope those of your who live in the area will be stopping by the Village Green to enjoy the parade. For those who live far away, I hope you will find a way to honor our fallen service men and women as we will do here.

Hi Andrea-These are excellent photos and a sobering reminder of what Memorial day is all about. It sounds like the parade and all the happening will be a wonderful tribute to all our brave men and women who sacrificed for our great country. Have a wonderful memorial weekend. <SMILE>

Hi Sharon, why thank you! I always enjoy the parade, but with a touch of melancholy, that's for sure. You have a wonderful Memorial weekend too.

Andrea --- beautiful photos --- this is certainly a very sobering holiday --- one to sit and reflect and be thankful for all of the fallen heroes. Thanks for sharing these photos.

Andrea, I love your photos and your post!  It sounds like your town knows how to honor our veterans both present and our fallen heros.

Liz, thank you so much. It is indeed a sobering holiday. You are very welcome!

Marchel, thank you. Memorial Day has always been an important day in this town. I have watched the parade every year, and seen our veterans march or drive with pride, and every year it gets to me. I will be attempting to video the parade this year, as well as taking photos!

Andrea, we also have a parade here in Middletown tomorrow.  I use to march with the Vietnam Vets, but have not done so in a few years, I need to get back to doing that.

One question, how in the world does anyone train a duck??????? ......... LOL

Hi George, well, it wasn't easy. I took my duck to any watercourse I could find, stopwatch in hand. We worked hard all year long for this. Special diet, pep talks, coaches. Here is a picture of my guy, notice the fine muscle tone, the steely look in his eyes, he is a winner I am sure. I hope he wins... I really want that 50 inch tv. <g>

Andrea:  What a beautiful scene... the Town Green in Milford.  It's a look we just do not have down here in Fort Worth... or at least I have not seen it.  What history... you are surrounded by it.  Thanks so much for sharing...

And... I just really like the way you worded your "imitation is the highest form of flattery" paragraph at the bottom of your post.  What a great way of sharing your stuff... but asking, or requiring the asking of permission and a link back.  Very professionally done.  I like it !

Karen, thank you! On both counts. It is beautiful here, I am rather partial to this part of Connecticut! It has been years since I have been to Texas, and have to admit I don't remember much of it, but thru AR I am learning about Texas myself!

Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day!
