Wordy Wednesday, Field of Flags in Bridgewater CT

Field of Flags Bridgewater CT

On October 23rd, 2005, the Somers Connecticut Congregational Church dedicated what is known as the "Field of Flags" to honor and commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Memorial Garden Committee also wanted to show support to those serving, and this was their way of doing it. The first Field of Flags had 2,231 American flags back then, as that was the amount of our soldiers who had died.

The display has traveled since then, adding more flags to the display as more of our service men and women give up their lives for our freedom.

I had never heard of the Field of Flags before, but the other night I was traveling through Bridgewater, and saw the Field of Flags at the Bridgewater Congregational Church. There were people out there taking pictures, reading the display with the names posted, wandering through the field. It was quite a sight to behold.

The display has grown to almost 5,000 flags, unfortunately.

Thank you to those volunteers who are keeping this Field of Flags going.

Andrea - I had never heard of the field of flags. What a fantastic tribute to those that serve this great country. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Although it's very sad that there are so many flags displayed, it's a wonderful tribute to those who've lost their lives.

Great post Andrea.

Caren, I hadn't either, but it is pretty impressive.

Judy, you are very welcome. I thought it was a very beautiful way to pay tribute.

Craig, it sure is, on both counts, sad and a wonderful tribute. Thank you.

Charles, it really does. And when you are standing there it just breaks your heart.

Thanks, Andrea.  He was originally going to learn a trade and now unfortunately, he thinks he wants to go for hands on missions of war. I think that movies may have glorified battle a bit.

Wow! This is a wonderful tribute. One does not realize the amount of casualties war inflicts upon our troops until you have a graphic representation like the one demonstrated. Makes you really appreciate the sacrifice our troops make doesn't it...

Hello Sharon, thank you. I found it very moving and sad indeed.

Liz, it seems like a really good thing to do, just a quiet way of making a very large statement.

Hannah, thank you very much, and you are always very welcome!

Marchel, you are very correct, freedom is never free. Thank you for your comment.

Michael, it really made me stop and think. When you look at the display it rather gets to you.

Hi Al & Peggy, it was sad but yes, very heartwarming. Hard to look at really.
