Sizzlin hot temps here in CT, surviving the heat wave.
The temperature is rising with no relief until the end of the week! For those of us that don't have central air or even window air conditioners here are a few suggestions that might help you survive the heat.
- Put a cool wet towel over your head and shoulders
- Put your feet in a bucket of ice water
- Drink plenty of water (avoid caffeine and alcohol)
- Take quick, cool showers
- Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing of fabric that breaths
- Stay out of the sun
- Avoid too much activity
- Keep your windows and curtains closed during the day
Check on the elderly, they often don't have the ability to feel the heat, but their bodies will still react to it. A trip to the grocery store or department store, a restaurant, these things can help if you just can't stand the heat. Young children also don't have the ability to tolerate the heat. Keep them inside, take the same precautions with them as with the elderly.
Can you recognize heat related illnesses? Here is a great list from Medicinenet.com, you should check it out. Heat rash, heat cramps, heat syncope, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a true medical emergency, you should learn to recognize the symptoms.
Finally, don't cut the grass. One of the worst thing you can do is to cut the grass during a heat wave. It will cause the grass to turn brown even faster! So stay inside, if you have air conditioning, enjoy it. If you don't, pay attention to how you are feeling and perhaps find a friend that does have AC or go out to a restaurant! Who wants to cook in the heat anyway?

Stay cool, Andrea. Those New England heat waves can be brutal. Strange that it seems it's hotter up there during the summer than in Sarasota!
Andrea I think I did almost everything I shouldn't have done on your list. I did have a lot of fun doing it though:)
Andrea we will hit 100 officially today and of course much higher than that in other areas. Staying in shade is a good thing, but if I'm in the shade I'm in the trees and that's not good for the swing.
Andrea....my office is at 68 degrees at all times.....we are very comfortable.....now, to get the phone to ring during this heat wave!!
No AC in my new home. Did figure out the closed windows and am hustling to put more curtains up. Will have to try the wet towel today!
AND KEEP THE PETS INDOORS!!!!
William, you are right, when we get a heat wave, oh boy it just knocks me for a loop!
Bill, Bill, Bill, hey, be careful out there! I have a Wrangler, no AC, I pull the windows off and put down the sun bonnet. I also have a personal fan I put cold water in, those things rock!
Ed, ghesh, take a day or 2 off will ya? Golf will be there! Take care of yourself.
Barbara, I am heading to the office, but have to show properties this afternoon. We keep the AC on and the lights off, the lights off part really helps.
Irene, give it a shot! We have window AC's, but not all over the house.
Andrea...
I was visiting Cape Cod once during one of those heat waves. It was awful because NOBODY had A/C.
KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED DURING THE DAY????
How can that help??? I rarely use air condition although I have it on today. But, I keep several windows open on front and back for ventilation. I also close blinds where ever the sun is shining, back in the a.m. and front in the p.m.
"Splain please".
Andrea--Hope you are able to keep cool...We just survived several 90+ high humidity days. Supposed to cool for us tomorrow. Nothing like what you are experiencing out east this week, though we have our days like this too. Great tips for keeping cool!
Looking at the weather forecast, it doesn't appear that you guys are going to be getting a break any time soon. Can you say frosty adult beverage?!!!
Great advice Andrea, sounds like we are having the same type of weather.....we were sizzling today at 99 degrees and that was at 4 o'clock! We're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave! Remember February?
Andrea, the thermostat in my car hit 103 at one point today.
And reading your blog I now have discovered another use for cold showers :)
Richard, of course the newer, larger homes have central air here, but you are right, on the whole the older homes just don't have central air.
Lenn, I don't know why it works. But it does. I guess not letting any of that hot, humid air in works best if you have no AC.
Teri, it was miserable yesterday, and going to be miserable today too.
Craig, it is even too hot for a frosty adult beverage...
Morning Al & Peggy, it was miserable. I had to drive in my jeep, had the sun bonnet down and the windows out, I still fried to a crisp.
George, sticky, icky weather. The temp at our high school read 110 yesterday. What was that all about?
Hi Andrea ~ This heat is making me crazy!! I don't believe in A/C at home - though I am an enthusiast in the office. I bought the book Losing Our Cool about how the increase in A/C is screwing up our environment big time - it's good to have the reinforcement on days like these. The weather forecast is really making me hoopy - not sure if I can get through it. Bummer!
