Litchfield County History, the Brick School House, Warren CT

Litchfield County History, the Brick School House in Warren, CT has the distinct honor of being the longest continual operating one room school house in Connecticut history!

Warren CT Brick School House

Built in 1784, the little red Brick School House, located on what is now Brick School Rd in Warren Connecticut was called North West School. At the time it was built there were 7 school districts in Warren. The last class to graduate from North West School was in 1924.

The building fell into disrepair over the years. In 1963 a Mr. Frank Reinhold purchased the school and donated it to the Warren Historical Society 5 years later, when it was lovingly restored.

I was in Warren yesterday looking at homes when I passed by the Brick School House. I couldn't help but stop and take a few photos, it really is a wonderful old building. I only wish I could have gotten inside, I could see a few desks in there, but couldn't get a photo through the glass. That will be photos for another day.

The countryside in Warren is so beautiful, so peaceful. The town of Warren is 27.6 square miles and has a population of 1,385 people. Nestled between Kent, Washington, Litchfield and Cornwall, CT, the rolling hillsides are a site to behold. There are wonderful estates, properties on Lake Waramaug, farms, homes of all sizes and prices.

If you are taking a drive through Litchfield County, make sure you take a drive through Warren, CT. If you have a day or two to spend, stay at the lovely Rooster Tail Inn, I understand it is fantastic! The rooms are wonderful, and the food is, as my friend says, worth the trip! A short trip down the road from the Rooster Tail Inn is Brick School Rd, you can certainly take a drive to see the Brick School House!

Andrea, it is such a fairy tale look alike old building, just looks like those in a story book.  It is very cute!

Andrea, school buildings have changed a lot from those days.  I wonder what the class size was in this building?

Hi Andrea, I love love love it. Since you have become a photographer, isn't it amazing how we will make sure to stop and capture things. Just imagine what we all missed before our focus was centered on sharing all the treasures we find to take photos of. Photography has really enhanced our lives so much and sharing the captures has truly become such a wonderful pleasure.

Hi Andrea ~ That is the coolest building - such an amazingly steep and narrow hipped roof - I love it.  My mother went to a one-room schoolhouse in Natick for grades one and two I think it was.  That amazes me - she's not that old.

Andrea,

Wonderful Localism blog. your photos are so good, and the scenery is just fabulous. What started as a photo of a cute little school, terned into a wonderful blog about the area.

Great walk in history Andrea! What a cute little house. Can just imagine all the little kids sitting in a row.  Gee, no cheating or fooling around in class there, the teacher would spot you immediatley! Would have been neat to get inside. Come on super snooper, you can do it!

Please find me a home in Litchfiled County!  Beautiful.  And I love the story about the school house.

Janna, that particular day I had the sun bonnet down and all the windows out of the jeep. Although my hair certainly looks a bit wind whipped, I so love it! A bit more manual that your car I bet... It is beautiful here!

Rita, thank you! It does have a very special look to it, doesn't it?

George, I can say the class sizes were... small. LOL. And with the population of Warren being so small and the fact they had 7 schools, well... small.

William, driving with me is an experience. I am like a bobble head, only from side to side!

Hi Liz, isn't it wonderful? Oh wow, that is very cool about your mom. I know a few people who went to a few of the one room school houses here. And all are very successful people, how about that?

Jon, thank you so much! I drove by and had to go back, it just hit me as a great photo op.

Michael, thank you! And every time I see that photo of yours I chuckle, I love Spock!

Jackie, thank you!

Hi Al & Peggy, well, here is the thing, there is a big padlock on the door, LOL. It was too dark inside to take photos through the window!

Bill, thank you so much!

Lee & Pamela, we have a few here, I am always excited when they open them up!

Craig, thank you so much! No photo's today as it is raining cats and dogs here, which we certainly needed.

Andrea, that is cool!  I am glad that someone had the forsight to restore it rather than tear it down!

Patsy, if you really want to live here I think I can find one for you! We need a good stager here. :D

Hi Tony, you are so right about that. We have quite a few of the old school houses left, one of them will be opening soon for tours and I will be there, camera in hand!
