Litchfield County Connecticut, Spotlight on New Milford Downtown Area.
I love New Milford at any time of year. I am not sure which part of New Milford makes it so special, I think it is all the parts as a whole. But I am particularly fond of the downtown area. The phrase "quintessential New England" comes to mind! I have read that it is perhaps the most beautiful Village Green in Connecticut. I venture to say all of New England! I could be bragging, but I doubt it.
We use our Village Green! It's not just for show.
The local downtown business community has banded together and come up with a new twist, "Distinctly Downtown". I don't need the banners and signs to let me know how wonderful our downtown area is. I have lived in the downtown area, I work downtown, I have shopped, dined, gone to a movie, enjoyed a coffee, sat on the green and people watched, I have enjoyed many a Village Fair Days here on the green, I love the Christmas Trees and the atmosphere during the holiday season, my office hosts the Hayride on the Green and visit with Santa, I come down here to enjoy the fireworks, free concerts, Halloween Trunk or Treat, the list goes on and on and on and on.
For all you history buffs, our New Milford Town Hall, located on the corner of Main & Church Street, was where Roger Sherman's house stood. In case you aren't aware, Roger Sherman is the ONLY person to have signed all 5 founding documents of the United States. The Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Articles of Association and the Constitution of the United States. He also represented New Milford as both a Congressman and Senator while he lived here.
New Milford is the largest town area-wise in Connecticut at 64 square miles. Coming up Route 7 along the New York border, New Milford is the first town in Litchfield County and often referred to as "the gateway to the Litchfield Hills". There is breathtaking beauty everywhere, each part of New Milford has its own distinct flavor to enjoy.
- Candlewood Lake provides swimming, boating and fishing.
- The Housatonic River joins Lake Lillinonah for fishing, boating, crew and canoeing
- Northern New Milford has some of the most spectacular farmland views around.
- We have hiking trails all over throughout the area.
- Mindblowing fall foliage all over town.
- The list goes on and on!
But the real crown jewel is our downtown area. Rich in history and newly revitalized there is so much to enjoy. Want an evening out? Try dinner at one of our many fantastic restaurants then wander over to Bank Street Theater to take in a movie. Or perhaps you want to see a theatrical production after dinner. You can walk over to TheatreWorks and catch a show. Get here on a Saturday morning and you can shop the Farmers Market at the north end of the green. We might even be using the rest of the green like we are today for fun at the Teddy Bear Festival.
You never know who or what you will see here. From famous actors and actresses who live here, to Smokey The Bear, who I ran into today!
Arts, crafts, food, entertainment, shopping for clothes, jewelry, books, get your hair done, have a mani-pedi, replenish your olive oil supply, get the dog some really great treats, and of course, purchase a new home here in New Milford! Stop by our office on the green at 27 Main Street to meet your new home. I would be happy to show you why I love New Milford and why you will too!
