Sunrise over the Ridge, looking for photo storage ideas now.

I really thought I had lost all my photographs, or at least thought it would be a real hassle to find them. They were stuck inside an old computer that would not turn on anymore. The hard drive had been taken out of a few different computers already, so there were years of "stuff" on this particular hard drive. I always put 2 hard drives in my computers, one only for storage. Long story short, I rescued my old pictures, the hard drive is safe, and I am happy!

There are so many storage ideas for pictures out there, I now understand how important it is to make sure you have additional storage other than your hard drives. I saw one suggestion here on Activerain which suggested you use memory cards for storage, considering how cheap they are now. I have begun burning them on a DVD, but I am not sure if this is the best idea either. Maybe memory sticks?

I would love to hear your suggestions for picture storage!

In the meantime, this is a picture I took a few years back (2/12/05) of sunrise behind my home! I know there is snow on the ground, but I just love this picture! Every time I look at it I realize how blessed I am to live where I live! Please enjoy.

WOW !! This is a dynamic picture Andrea ! ... beautiful but slightly ominous all in one ... soo gripping ! Great shot !

I store my pictures two ways. I have a backup hard drive that I dump to once a week, and I also burn specific categories of pictures or files to DVD. This could easily be replaced with memory sticks, so I think you can go ahead and do either. Happy Sunday Andrea !

Really cool Picture! I've started storing my pix on jump drives. (I'm not too techno savvy. Is that the same thing as Memory sticks?) That way they are easily carried to other computers if needed. But, big drawback is if you lose your jump drive.

Hi Andrea ~ The picture is stunning!  I'm not full of advice for photo storage since backing up is one my weak points.  I was an archivist before I became a real estate agent and I don't have high hopes for today's records being saved long term that's for sure. I'll watch to see what solutions people suggest.

Sheldon, thank you. I have always had 2 hard drives, I will probably get a new one and put it in the computer. Burning to DVD is probably a good practice to get into. I really thought I lost all my pictures, whew.

Kim, thank you. Yep, that is the same thing as a memory stick. Might use those too, as I use my laptop for a lot of stuff.

Hi Liz, thank you for the compliment. You were an archivist? LOL, well... if you don't have hopes, doesn't sound good.

Andrea...having lost photos that I can never recover I save them on a hard drive and burn them to a disk and started uploading my best ones up to flickr.....but with flickr they only give you a small amount of space....great photo by the way...peace zane

Andrea - Yes burning to dvd is a good idea if you don't want to drop the money for another external hd. But they are coming down in price everyday so.....

I store my photos online at so that I can rest at night.  They keep my data safe, and I can access my online files from any computer.  And unlike other photo sharing sites, they also offer online backup - so I can backup all my important documents (it's a scheduled backup).  Definitely, give it a look.  You can try it out for free.

Hi Zane, the sad part was, they were on a second hard drive on a computer that died a very unnatural death. I was so shocked when it happened. I could upload to picassa, but they don't give me enough space. Never tried flickr.

Robert, I am thinking that the external hd is much easier than cracking open the new computer and installing a new hard drive. I will back up on dvd until my next closing. Thank you, I had not thought of an external hd.. duh... LOL.

Jeff, I will go check that out, thank you for the tip!
